Is fruit high in sugar?

Many clients turn to fruit when trying to cut back on sugar and processed foods. Fruit is full of vitamins, minerals, fiber and water to support digestion, satiety and hydration. However, if you are trying to control blood sugar levels or manage your weight, follow my ABC’s to avoid the highest-sugar fruits.

Quantity is also important. With higher sugar fruits, 1/4 c mango or 1/2 a banana in a smoothie isn’t a big deal, but you also don’t want to eat 2 cups of berries at each meal. And be realistic. If you’re traveling and stuck at an airport where your choice is packaged chips, candy and cookies or a banana, the banana is the best option.

Eating fruit at the end of your meal or with protein or fat, like apple and nut butter or berries with plain Greek yogurt, will decrease blood sugar spikes.

Finally, when eating fruit, eat the real, whole fruit. Avoid fruit juices, even of ABC fruits, and avoid all dried fruit.
